Secretary of Defense Meets With Chinese Leaders

With the nation focused on the tragedy in Tucson, many people missed what was happening a half a world away in China. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, traveled to China to ease tension between the two nations and re-engage military dialogue, which had been suspended last year because of U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

Secretary Gates met with senior Chinese military leaders and the Chinese President Hu Jintao, unfortunately the meetings were overshadowed by the Chinese military unveiling the test flight of its own version of the stealth fighter. The Chinese president was unaware of the test flight, which leaves a huge question mark as to who is really in control of the Chinese military.

Next week Presidnet Hu will travel to Washington to meet with President Obama to discuss many high level issues with economic, defense and foreign policy sure to be high on the list. The mounting federal debt and financing by China places the president in a precarious predicament with China.

This coming year the president will face challenges at home and abroad as he tackles economic and foreign policy challenges. The debt should be his primary concern.
