Afghan Strategy Review Released

The president released his much anticipated Afghan Strategy Review today and commented on that much progress has been made and much more is still to do.

Progress is being made after a surge of U.S. forces into Afghanistan this year, but challenges still remain with Pakistan. Experts who have studied the region all have stated if the U.S. is to be successful it will have to deal with the insurgent issue in Pakistan.

Two prevailing themes emerge, is that the U.S. needs to peruse a bottom up approach in Afghanistan, instead of the current top down strategy currently being implemented. The focus of U.S. efforts needs to re-establish the tribal structure and not on a strong central government as currently being perused.

The president and his national security team made a strategic mistake last month when he lavished praise on India; Pakistan's strategic enemy. Pakistan looks at the Taliban as an ally and a buffer against Indian influence inside Afghanistan.

The president needs to better understand the Afghanistan/Pakistan region if he wants to be successful.
