Richard Holbrooke dies: Veteran U.S. Diplomat & President’s Afghan Envoy

Longtime U.S. diplomat and President Obama’s Afghanistan envoy Richard Holbrooke has died of complications from surgery to repair a torn aorta.

Richard Holbrooke had a long and distinguished run in American foreign policy beginning in Vietnam, where he served in the U.S foreign service. His greatest accomplishment was ending the brutal war in the Balkans.

President Obama selected him to be his special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, but he has become a controversial figure as being against the presidents surge of U.S. forces into Afghanistan and repeatedly clashed with military commanders over the direction of the war.

The question now becomes does the president replace him and if so with whom?
